Southern Cross Jiu-Jitsu Academy

Our jiu-jitsu club dates back to the mid-1960s when Gordon Griffiths started teaching Goshin Ryu Ju-Jitsu at a sports hall in Gymea and called the club Southern Cross Goshin Ryu Ju-Jitsu.Rodney Ellis commenced training with Gordon as a 12yo in 1990 and took many of Gordon’s virtues to heart; including his fierce competitive determination and a passion for teaching and passing on knowledge.

In 1996 Rodney was introduced to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu from another student of Gordon’s, Larry Papadopoulos.  In 1998 Rodney made his first trip to Rio de Janeiro to train. Eight years later Rodney became only the 11th Australian (at the time) to earn a black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and still to this day the only Australian to be awarded all of his grades in Brazil. He received his black belt from the hands of Master Andre Pederneiras, himself a black belt from the late Master Carlson Gracie senior, and leader of one of the most successful teams in BJJ and MMA – Nova Unia o. By 2006 Gordon had moved away from the Shire, and with travel making teaching difficult, he passed the club name onto Rodney. Rodney renamed the club slightly to reflect the more Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu influence of his own career and has worked tirelessly on building it ever since.
